Food Waste Recycling Rate in Hong Kong

Waste is a long-standing environmental problem in Hong Kong.

Among all types of municipal solid waste, food waste is the major constituent which contributes about 40% of the total. In 2018, the amount of food waste has reached around 3600 tons per day. The more disappointing fact is that the figure did not show a decreasing trend over the past years.

According to our observation, the food waste collection industry in Hong Kong lacks the following efforts. Firstly, the participation of domestic households in food waste recycling is inferior. Environmental policies point at recycling other types of waste, such as plastic, paper and aluminum. Therefore, we promote food waste recycling to households through cooperation with the corresponding building management team. Secondly, the food waste collection industry could have the transportation services improved with better planning and innovative ways, which can significantly reduce the recycling cost and encourage more households and restaurants to start recycling.
